Just the Facts...Tallow Q&A

People often ask, “What is tallow?”, “Is tallow good for your skin?”, or “Why is grass-fed tallow better?” — and we love sharing those answers. At Tallow & Co., we believe in clean, simple skincare made with pure, organic ingredients that truly nourish your skin. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about tallow skincare, its benefits, and why we use only grass-fed and grass-finished tallow in every product we make.

1. What is Tallow?

Tallow is a pure, natural fat rendered from beef. When it’s grass-fed and grass-finished, it’s rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K — all essential for healthy, glowing skin. It closely mimics the oils our skin naturally produces, making it an incredible moisturizer that deeply nourishes without clogging pores.

2. Why is grass-fed and grass-finished Tallow better for your skin?

Grass-fed, grass-finished tallow comes from cattle raised naturally on pasture, not grain-fed. This results in tallow that’s higher in nutrients, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids. It’s free of hormones and synthetic additives — pure nourishment that helps heal, protect, and restore the skin barrier.

3. Is Tallow good for all skin types?

Tallow is naturally balanced and non-comedogenic, meaning it won’t clog pores. It’s beneficial for dry, oily, sensitive, and even acne-prone skin. Because it supports the skin’s natural microbiome, it helps reduce irritation and promotes a smooth, radiant complexion.

4. How do I use Tallow-based skincare products?

A little goes a long way. Warm a small amount between your fingers and apply to clean skin. Use on your face, body, lips, or even hair. Our products — from Orange Blossom Body Butter to Dandelion Root Balm — are versatile, deeply hydrating, and safe for daily use.

5. Is Tallow sustainable and ethically sourced?

Yes! At Tallow & Co., we source from local, grass-fed farms that follow ethical and regenerative farming practices. By using every part of the animal, including the fat that would otherwise be discarded, we help reduce waste and promote a more sustainable skincare solution.

16. What are the benefits of using Tallow on the face and body?

Tallow deeply moisturizes, repairs the skin barrier, and supports collagen production. It’s loaded with antioxidants that fight free radicals, helping to reduce fine lines and improve texture. Many users notice softer, brighter, and more youthful-looking skin after just a few uses.

17. How do I use Tallow-based skincare products in my routine?

Start with clean skin by using our Garbanzo Bean Scrub. Apply a small amount of tallow balm, cream, or butter to your face, neck, and body — a little goes a long way. You can use it daily as a moisturizer, overnight treatment, or even as a natural makeup remover or lip balm. No need for soaps, toners, serums or any additional products!

18. Is Vitamin E higher in grass fed, grass finished Tallow?

Yes! Vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) is 3 times higher in grass fed, grass finished tallow compared to grass fed grain finished tallow.

19. What should I look for when buying high-quality Tallow skincare?

Look for 100% grass-fed and grass-finished tallow that’s free from additives, synthetic fragrances, and preservatives. Choose products made in small batches using organic, responsibly sourced ingredients — like everything we handcraft at Tallow & Co.

20. Are there any risks or side effects to using Tallow on my skin?

Tallow is generally well-tolerated by all skin types because it’s so similar to our skin’s natural oils. However, if you have a beef allergy or extremely sensitive skin, it’s best to patch-test first. Our products are free from fragrances and harsh chemicals, making them ideal for delicate skin.

21. How does Tallow compare to conventional moisturizers or plant-based oils?

Unlike commercial moisturizers filled with synthetic fillers, tallow offers real nourishment. It mimics the skin’s natural sebum more closely than plant-based oils, allowing for deeper hydration and repair. Tallow is nature’s original skincare — pure, effective, and time-tested.

22. Does Tallow contain Vitamin C?

Yes, and compounds are up to 1.5 time higher in grass-fed, grass-finished beef compared to grain finished beef.

23. Is Tallow FDA approved?

No, tallow is not a chemical based/lab based food or cosmetic product. It is a natural product derived from beef fat. Grass fed, grass finished beef has a higher concentration of vitamin benefits than grain fed or grass fed grain finished beef.

24. Can you use Tallow in your hair?

Yes, you can use beef tallow in your hair for deep conditioning, to reduce frizz, and to add shine due to its rich content of vitamins and fatty acids. It is best used as a pre-shampoo hair mask, left on for 30 minutes to overnight, then thoroughly washed out with shampoo. For fine hair, use it infrequently to avoid weighing it down

25. Does Tallow help my skin?

Because of its emollient properties, tallow helps to create a protective barrier on the skin, which can reduce moisture loss and help with conditions like dryness, irritation, and eczema.

26. Does Tallow smell like beef?

No, beef tallow after it has been rendered down and all impurities have been removed is a clean and odorless product that can be used for skincare, and cooking.

27. Can you give beef Tallow to dogs?

Beef tallow provides benefits like healthy skin and coat, joint support, and energy, but too much can cause digestive issues like pancreatitis. Always ensure the tallow is plain, unsalted, and has not been cooked with ingredients toxic to dogs like garlic or onions.

28. Is beef Tallow biocompatible to human skin?

Yes, beef tallow is considered biocompatible with human skin because its lipid composition is similar to that of human sebum.

29. What additional ingredients are in Tallow & Co's products?

All ingredients are Grade-A sourced and 100% organic. Jojoba oil is in almost every product we offer (not in the deodorant). Often described as the closest botanical oil to human sebum, jojoba oil is actually a liquid wax ester. This makes it effective at balancing the skin's natural oil production and providing lightweight moisture.

30. How does Tallow hydrate skin?

Beef tallow also contains stearic acid and oleic acid which have got skin softening, hydration [and] repair characteristics. This means it could be suitable for skin experiencing eczema or psoriasis.

31. Why does Tallow moisturize human skin so well?

Grass fed, grass finished tallow is rich in fatty acids and vitamins (A, D, E, K) that can help moisturize, strengthen the skin's barrier, and provide antioxidant protection.

32. Does Tallow soothe psoriasis and eczema?

Yes! Due to its anti-inflammatory properties tallow may help soothe symptoms of conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

It is rich in fatty acids like oleic, palmitic, and stearic acids, which are also found in the skin's own structure.
